Your dentures won’t cause oral cancer, but poorly fitting dentures and poor oral care over a long period can cause irritation, infection, and the inflammation that has been associated with oral cancer. To limit your risk of oral cancer:

  • Refrain from heavy alcohol use.
  • Don’t use tobacco at all.
  • Have your dentures checked by your dentist regularly. Keep in mind that loose or poorly fitting dentures increase your risk of infection and inflammation.
  • Clean daily. All denture wearers should take their dentures out at night and clean and rinse them every day.

If you follow these guidelines, you won’t need to worry about your dentures contributing to oral cancer.
